Arc Advocates

What is Self-Advocacy?

Self-advocacy is the civil rights movement of individuals and organizations to empower people with developmental and other disabilities to speak for ourselves, make our own decisions and stand up for our rights.

Who We Are:

The ARC Advocates are a group of self-advocates who have a developmental and/or physical challenge. The group was established in January 2006 and have been working hard ever since to promote ability awareness to their peers and their community. The ARC Advocates want to inform the public of disability rights and their responsibilities as full citizens in the community.

Our Vision For Our Community:

The ARC Advocates envision South Huron as a stronger and more inclusive community- a place where diversity is embraced and celebrated, and where everyone has the same opportunities to participate in the life of the community, and the same responsibilities towards society as all other citizens.

What We Believe:

  • We believe in standing up for our rights
  • We believe in educating the community
  • We believe in ourselves-our talents and services
  • We believe in accessibility for all
  • We believe in inclusion for all
  • We believe in respect for all
  • We believe in equality for all
  • We believe in dignity-“feeling like an important person”
  • We believe in independence
  • We believe in changing attitudes-ours, our staff’s and our community’s

Current Projects:

We are currently working on a training program for our support workers-we want to teach staff how WE want and need to be supported.

When We Meet:

The ARC Advocates meet every Monday from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the Adult Resource Centre in Dashwood, Ontario.
